In a remarkable stride toward environmental preservation, The Nature Conservancy has acquired more than 12,000 acres of forest, lakes, and peatland north of Two Harbors. This acquisition, the organization’s largest in Minnesota in over 25 years, aims to conserve a significant portion of our state’s cherished North Woods.
The newly protected area will triple the size of the existing Sand Lake/Seven Beavers Preserve, creating a contiguous expanse of conserved land. This expansion is crucial for maintaining biodiversity, supporting wildlife habitats, and offering recreational opportunities such as hunting and fishing to the public.
Peatlands, like those included in this acquisition, are vital carbon sinks, storing more carbon per acre than forests. Their preservation plays a significant role in mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
